STEWART FRIESEN DOUBLES UP WINNING CAREER FEATURE NUMBERS 400 & 401

By: Ron Szczerba

Fonda, NY – With the Craftsman Truck Series schedule open for a few weeks with no scheduled races, Stewart Friesen came home on Saturday evening to compete at his home track, the “Track of Champions” Fonda Speedway.

It turned out to be a very special evening for the driver of the Halmar #44 as he not only captured the victory in the make-up Amsterdam Truck Center Modified feature from 4/27 but also claimed victory in the “Thunder on the Thruway Series” Modified feature after a stretch of bad luck took place for two earlier leaders of the event. As special as it is to win a feature event at Fonda, what made it even more special was the fact that his victories were career win numbers 400 & 401. All total, Friesen took home $6,400 for his efforts on Parks Companies Night.

Other winners on Parks Companies Night at Fonda included Payton Talbot (Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman), Ivan Joslin (make-up feature from 5/25) and Kenny Gates (Leatherstocking Credit Union Pro Stocks), AJ Greco (Montgomery County Office for Aging Inc. Limited Sportsman), Haleigh Gates (DOHC) and Ken Hollenback (SOHC) in the Fonda Fair Four Cylinder division.

Pastor Greg Nitz said a prayer during opening ceremonies followed by the singing of the National Anthem by Amanda Aiello. Joe from Cassville won the $2,503 50/50 after another fantastic job by Rose, Julie, & Heather.

The make-up Amsterdam Truck Center Modified feature event started with Chris Curtis leading at the drop of Joe Kriss’ green flag from his pole position start with Stewart Friesen in tow. Curtis was in lap traffic by lap nine and after falling back early on, Freisen was right on Curtis’ rear bumper by lap 10. When Curtis was held up by a lap car one lap later, Friesen went around the outside of both Curtis and the lap car to take the lead.

At the halfway point, Friesen held a straightaway advantage with Curtis, Bobby Hackel IV, Rocky Warner, and eighth place starter Michael Maresca in tow. Curtis’ great run ended with five laps to go when he came in contact with the lap car of Craig Hanson in turn two bringing out the caution. Two laps later Hackel had issues in the right rear of his car and brought out the caution while running third.

Friesen held the lead on the single file restart and led the remaining laps for career win #89 at Fonda and career win #400 overall! Maresca, Warner, Jessica Friesen, and ninth place starter Jack Lehner completed the top five.

“It’s been a couple of months right,” Friesen told Mimi Lazzaro in victory lane. “Thanks to the whole Halmar team, I had a really, really good drawback a month or so ago when we drew for this race, so it was good to get up there, stay in clean air, and take care of it. Getting 89 wins and not even at age 40 yet feels pretty cool, so we’ve got some time to get more under my belt hopefully, hopefully we can get a bunch more.”

A draw for starting positions placed Jessica Friesen on the pole for the $4,000 to win “Thunder on the Thruway Series” 30-lap Amsterdam Truck Center Modified event and she wasted no time taking the lead at the drop of the green flag, stretching out her lead to a straightaway advantage over Roger Henion Jr. by lap three. Fifth place starter Ronnie Johnson and eighth place starter Stewart Friesen both took turns getting by Henion for position a third of the way through the event, Johnson getting by Henion for the second position on lap nine and two laps later Stewart Friesen getting by Henion for the third spot.

Jessica Friesen held almost a half track lead when the caution came out on lap 14 for Brian Calabrese who slowed on track with a flat right rear tire. Jessica Friesen chose the outside for the restart and maintained the lead at the drop of the green with seventh place starter and defending Track Champion Demetrios Drellos gaining two spots to third on the restart. At the halfway point, the top five consisted of Jessica Friesen, Drellos, Johnson, Stewart Friesen, and Bobby Hackel IV.

Luck was not on Jessica Friesen’s side as she showed signs of smoke from the rear of her car in turn three on lap 21 and came to a stop to bring out the caution, handing the lead over to Drellos. Drellos’ lead only lasted two laps as he fell victim to bad luck as well with something breaking on the car resulting in him driving to the pit area off of turn three. Stewart Friesen was now the race leader and he survived one more restart after a caution flag to take career win #90 at Fonda and career win #401 overall!

Maresca, Johnson, Hackel, and 14th place starter Jack Lehner completed the top five.

“We were gonna get them one way or another tonight,” Friesen said after the win. “Jess had a great car and was running her ass off and had a motor issue. That’s disappointing, I gotta do a better job keeping the steam under her. I think Drellos had a motor issue too but thanks to the whole Halmar Team and our great supporters and all of the fans here at Fonda Speedway.”

“After my win in the first feature, some people texted me about it being win #400,” Friesen continued to say. “It is just real, real special and we got about 25 percent of them right here at Fonda. It all started in 1999 at Lancaster on the pavement, but it’s great to be back here at Fonda. Thanks to all of the fans that love this place as much as we do. They are working on it, it is what it is, but there is no better place to spend a Saturday night then here at Fonda.”

Payton Talbot drew the pole for the $1,500 to win “Thunder on the Thruway Series” Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman event, taking the lead at the drop of the green flag and leading all laps for the victory in the Belmont’s Garage #14. All of the action was further back in the field with three wide moves for position throughout the field.

The first one included Mark Mortensen and Chad Edwards who went three wide with both getting by Blaine Klinger for positions just outside of the top five. The next was by 12th place starter Stephen Gray who not only did it once, but twice, the final time getting around both Chip Constantino and a lap car for the second position with three laps to go. Talbot went on to his second win of 2024 and the 13th of his career in the division at Fonda followed by Gray, Constantino, Edwards, and Clayton DuMond.

“I was just trying to stay aggressive all night,” Talbot said in victory lane. “When it’s hammer down like this you have to stay out front and drive as hard as you can. I was trying to be as aggressive as I could in lap traffic and get around them cleanly, it all paid off, this car was a missile.”

The make-up Leatherstocking Credit Union Pro Stock feature from 5/25 started with defending Track Champion Ivan Joslin on the pole and taking the lead at the drop of the green flag. Nick Stone took over the second position on lap eight and put immediate pressure on Joslin for the lead. One final caution came out on lap 13 for debris on the backstretch and on the restart fifth place starter Kenny Gates was the new second place car with Shane Playford third and Stone now back to fourth.

Joslin led the remaining laps for his second win of the season and the 16th of his career in the division in the Southside Beverage/One Zee Tees #49 over Gates, Gary Silkey, Playford, and Devon Camenga. Stone finished in the top five but was disqualified in post-race inspection for his rear deck lid being too high.

“It is hard to get one win here and to keep collecting them and go back to back is really cool,” Joslin told Mimi Lazzaro in victory lane while they talked about his 16th career win in the division. “It was a hard fought race, I know that the track was pretty bitey and rough, so I just had to hit my marks. I missed it once and gave him an opportunity, but I had to shut the door and get the win. It was a total team effort.”

The $1,000 to win “Thunder on the Thruway Series” Leatherstocking Credit Union Pro Stock feature started with Ivan Joslin and Kenny Gates on the front row with Gates taking the early lead. Through four caution flags throughout the event, Gates restarted in different positions, both inside and outside trying to maintain his lead, and at one point lost the lead to Luke Horning on a lap 12 restart, only to have the caution come out again to relegate the pass for the top spot.

One final restart with only a few laps remaining saw Joslin go from fourth to second and pressuring Gates for the remainder of the event, but Gates held on for his first win of the season in the Upstate Spray Foam/Palmer’s Service Center #35 and the 93rd of his career in the division. Joslin ended up second followed by Beau Ballard, Horning, and Jason Morrison.

“I wondered how the track would be tonight,” Gates said after his victory. “I was good on the outside and even better on the bottom. I felt some pressure and said I better get down there, hold him off, and here we are. What a great night with Haleigh (Haleigh Gates, Kenny’s niece) winning, my God it’s fantastic.”

The Montgomery County Office for Aging Inc. Limited Sportsman feature began with Bob Rhinehardt the early leader following a six car accident in turn four, an accordion effect crash on the initial start, involving last week’s winner Rocco Constantino who flipped his car over but was not injured. Corky Warner was also involved along with Lance Hill, Walter Cook, and two other cars but all besides Constantino were able to restart the event.

Rhinehardt led through lap 11 while Warner and AJ Greco worked their way to the front. Warner was the second place car on lap seven but while pressuring Rhinehardt for the lead on lap 10, Warner ended up in the backstretch wall after his front end collapsed coming out of turn two. On the restart, Greco who started eighth was the new second place car and one lap later he was the race leader after getting by Rhinehardt on the outside of turns three and four.

Greco went on to his third win of the season in the Bernie Smith Trucking #12AJ with Rhinehardt, Phil Arnold, Kirsten Swartz, and Tim Wilmot completing the top five.

“I couldn’t do it without my dad, he is the genius behind the operation,” AJ said in victory lane. “Also, Chris Reckner and Andrew Buff from JAM Performance & Elmo’s they really have me hooked up. We find ourselves around a lot of wrecks, I think we’re just lucky so far and hopefully we can keep that luck. Going forward the biggest thing for points is staying in one piece and luckily we’ve been good so far.”

Haleigh Gates started the Fonda Fair Four Cylinder feature in the third position but by the time lap one was completed she was the race leader. Through numerous cautions, restarts, and chaos, Gates managed to lead every lap on her way to her first career win in the Pattersonville Service #42 DOHC while Ken Hollenback was the SOHC winner after finishing in the fifth position overall. Kerrie Hollenback, Jay Ingersoll, and John Napoli finished in between Gates and Ken Hollenback in the top five.

“This is a dream come true, this is so awesome” Gates told Mimi Lazzaro after her feature win. “I’ve been here celebrating with Kenny (Haleigh’s uncle Kenny Gates), but never did I think it would be me up here, so this is a real special moment. Out of all the tracks we’ve been to this is the hardest, the fastest, you can fly here. It is so much fun and the people that come here they’re the best.”

Next Saturday a full racing card will be presented by Randall Implements on “Fan Appreciation Night” featuring $5 grandstand admission and a pre-race Meet n’ Greet. All regular divisions will be in action along with make-up features from 5/25 for the Amsterdam Truck Center Modifieds, and the Montgomery County Office for Aging Inc. Limited Sportsman with racing at 6:30.
